Did Santa ever exist?

December 21, 2021

Many of us have found out the truth from our siblings, through our detective work or parents who wanted to make sure we don't believe in fairytales. Some of us never believed in Santa but kept writing letters to him anyway.

Did you find an unpacked present and understand that it was bought by your parents instead? I hope your childhood Christmases were joyful regardless.

When asking our employees - "Thingies" - we found a couple of gullible ones among us: "I don't know what you're talking about", or "He isn't". Santa or not, the best thing about the holiday season for us Thingies is we get a chance to spend time with the family, friends, having the possibility to enjoy delicious food.

And - of course - the overall Christmas vibes: Tree - fake or real with coloured or clear lights. As kids, some of us experienced the misery of getting woollen socks, underwear, long johns and bad chocolate when we wanted computer hardware and toys instead. I wish we had known then that as adults, receiving woollen socks and long johns is the best thing!

Charity over Santa?

At New Things Co, we've discussed conscious consumption and the different types of charities. The past 21 months have been new to all of us, and mental health concerns us all one way or another.

The WHO constitution has stated: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." They've also noted that mental health is a state of well-being in which individuals realise their abilities, cope with the everyday stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community.

We have also recently worked with companies like Givsly, who enable doing good business and good for our communities simultaneously. So it was pretty obvious what we should do this year.

50% of us have done charity already, and this year all of us had the chance to do charity by making sure that at one level, Santa does exist. We used the budget reserved for the charitable gifts and donated Christmas greetings to Mieli Ry. I hope we all enjoy a peaceful break and focus on activities that bring us joy.

Happy holidays!
